T The Independence Column was originally a monument created in honor of Charles IV, King of Spain during the 18th century. It was designed and built by architect Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras in 1791.
Later, after the consummation of Independence, Tresguerras himself modified it in 1823, resulting in a Corinthian column topped with the Mexican eagle.
Originally, it stood in the city’s Main Garden, but in 1906 it was moved
to Calzada Independencia, where it currently stands.
